I love eating out at restaurants except for one thing. The water. When you
take a drink the water shouldn't have a taste to it but more often than
not it does. I guess I'm too sensitive but in reality the problem was
affecting my weight loss since sodas are usually the only other option.
After sitting down to figure out where I could cut calories I ended up
with a plan. It was simple really. Just take a bottle of water and instead
of ordering soda I could get a glass of ice and be done. Simple? I hadn't
thought this one out completely.
I first tried out my plan at a local Mexican restaurant that I
frequent. They have the smallest grilled chicken breast I have ever seen
and it was perfect for my diet. As soon as I sat down a bored waitress
came over and asked what I would like to drink.
"Just ice," I smiled.
Just ice?" she seemed miffed but turned and left. I guess she had
time to ponder my request on the way to the kitchen because she returned
with the glass of ice in hand but didn't set it down.
"You have your own drink?"
"Yes," I used my polite voice.
"You can't have your own drink in here," she said abruptly.
"Oh," I was a little surprised, " it's just bottled
water."
"We have water!" she was obviously irritated.
"I'm sorry," I apologized, "I'll have a bottle of
water."
"We don't have bottled water."
"OK," now I was getting irritated, "what kind of water do
you have?"
"We have tap water."
I consider myself to be a calm person but she was really getting on my
nerves.
"How much do you charge for tap water?" I quizzed her.
"Water is free!" the waitress snapped back.
"OK," I squirmed in my seat a little, "I have to drink this
bottle because the doctor says I can no longer have dirt in my drinking
water."
She gave me a hard look and then believe it or not she set down the glass
of ice and walked away!
The rest of my meal went without much problem, mostly because I didn't
see her until the tiny chicken breast was ready and again when the check
came. I still don't understand why a waitress would get so upset about
bringing your own water if they don't sell it. I finished my meal and left
the empty water bottle as part of her tip.
As I was walking out the door she scowled at me and I heard her
customer ask, "Why can't I have bottled water? That guy had
one!" |
